Well, I've been saved by the grace of southern charm..

that one time…it really was frozen..

So we recently went on vacation down to Pensacola. Matt lived in Pensacola for about a year total between two different Marine Corps schools, so it was neat to go back and see things at the base, and just enjoy the beach.

Well, I decided for our one meal out — we cooked most of the time — we'd go to a seafood restaurant right on the water. The kind of place where you can watch the boats come in while you eat. We were all excited for some fresh Gulf seafood.

We sat down, ordered our drinks, and started looking over the menu. Matt ordered a seafood platter, and I went with something simple — maybe shrimp or fish, I can't quite remember now. But what I do remember is what happened when the food arrived.

Matt cut into his fish, took a bite, and just stopped. He looked at me with this expression — half confused, half amused — and said, "I think this is still frozen in the middle."

Sure enough, it was. At a seafood restaurant. Right on the water. In Florida. Frozen fish.

We couldn't help but laugh. The server was apologetic and took care of it, but it became one of those stories you tell over and over — that one time we went all the way to Pensacola for seafood and got served something straight from the freezer.

Beyond that one meal, the trip was wonderful. We drove around the base, and Matt pointed out the buildings where he'd gone through training, the barracks he'd stayed in, and the spots that held memories from those years. It was special to see that part of his life through his eyes, and to share it with the kids.

The beach was beautiful — soft white sand and warm water. We spent hours just relaxing, letting the waves wash over our feet, and soaking in the slow, easy rhythm of the Gulf Coast. It felt like the kind of vacation where you come back a little more yourself.

Pensacola holds a unique place in our family story. It's where Matt spent some formative time in the Marine Corps, and going back together gave us all a deeper appreciation for that chapter. Even with the frozen fish, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
