So we recently went on vacation down to Pensacola. Matt lived in Pensacola for about a year total between 2 different Marine Corps schools, so it was neat to go back and see things at the base, and just enjoy the beach.
Well, I decided for our 1 meal out (we cooked at the camper the rest of the time), I wanted some good gulf seafood. After some recommendations from friends, I found a cheap gift certificate on Restaurant.com for a place I wanted to try. The experience with buying the gift certificate from restaurant.com was awesome – the awesomeness ended there.
We decided to go there after we had spent the morning at the National Naval Aviation Musuem. So fun! The first indication of a problem came when we pulled into the parking lot to a “hole in the wall” type place – OK, looks can be deceiving so we went inside. We ordered our drinks, and looked over the menu. The waitress, an older lady fussed over the kids and even offered to fill Natalee’s sippy cup without us having to order her a drink and pour it ourselves. We got our food ordered – Katie ordered fried fish, Matt ordered a crawfish po-boy and we ordered grill cheese for the kids. I ordered shrimp & grits – something I love so much after getting hooked on it at the officers club at MCAS Beaufort.
Everyone’s food came, we all dug in. My grits came in the form of a giant fried ball of grits. Weird, but OK – I cut it in 2 and holy crap this is frozen.
Me: shit, this ball of grits is frozen Matt: is it really? send it back. Me: Excuse me, this grits ball is frozen in the middle still ( note to self, what was that thing on their menu I read about fresh never frozen??? ) Waitress – Oh Emm Gee.!!!!…I will get that corrected for you.
Meanwhile the kids begin to eat, and I sit coloring on the paper that lines the table (it was allowed). I take note that the 2 grill cheese sandwiches are burned on one side – the side they faced down on the plate. Oh well, the kids are eating, all is good. An uncomfortable 10 minutes pass by. Waitress brings food back out, and oh look they added extra shrimp for my trouble, and it’s a brand new “grit ball”. I cut the grit ball in half again, and touch it as the waitress watches.
Me: Umm, this is cold, but not quite as frozen as the last time. Waitress: Are you serious? Me: Yes, I am serious, stick your finger in it, I don’t care!! (cause as this point, I am obviously NOT eating this grit ball). Waitress: I have been here for 3 months and I’ve never seen this happen before, I told the cook and he said they must have packed the grits too tight when they formed the balls. Matt: *nods* (clearly becoming annoyed that this is going on).
She takes the food back again. Matt passes me his plate, since it’s becoming obvious I am going to have to take my food to go, because the kids are starting to finish their food. I take a few bites of his sandwich, and a bite of Natalee’s fries. Another 7 to 8 minutes pass She brings me my food back out for a 3rd time, with more shrimp again. She then walks away. I cut the grit ball open again, and you guessed it – COLD! Matt said “just don’t say anything, they obviously aren’t going to get it right”. I push the grit ball to the side, and the rest is so hot that it would burn Satan’s mouth, so I push the shrimp around in hopes that it will cool off. I ask the waitress politely for a box and load my still piping hot food into the box, and Matt asks for the check. Then take Natalee & Jonathan to the bathroom. I come back out, and Matt presses down to sign the check and the top of the pen flies off and lands across the table. He is so pissed at this point over my food, that the pen issue wasn’t really funny, and I had to stifle a laugh (unsuccessfully I might add). He signs the check, we gather my food and leave.
When he gets in the car he says “you need to write a horrible review, they charged you FULL PRICE ($15) for your shrim’n grits”. He was so mad that he didn’t even try to argue with them. He said that while I was busy with the kids while waiting for our food, he overheard the waitress and the cook laughing and making fun of the fact that my food was cold, and that was what got him to be angry. I wish he had said something to the waitress about being charged full price for the food, but we did end up getting a decent discount with the $25 gift card we had.
I will say that the next day I had the shrimp & grits for “brunch” – and it was good, minus the “grit ball”. Would we go back to “The Fishermans Corner” on Perdido Key Drive in Pensacola – probably not. Would we recommend them to friends – nope.
Teri says: August 5, 2011 at 11:59 pm What a miserable experience. It would have been bad enough as it was, but having the waitress and cook think it was funny had to be the last straw. They should have, at the very least, taken the cost of your food off the bill (I’m sure they’d say, “Well, you took the shrimp with you” but come on! Cold grits? Ugh!) We had a “grilled cheese incident” many years ago when a restaurant burned my daughter’s sandwich, but brought it out burned side up. I sent it back. They grilled another one and brought it back out. I flipped it over and – surprise! – this one was burned, too. I sent that one back and the third one was finally edible. Not a crisis, but annoying. Reply
