My cousins are coming up to North Georgia (Young Harris, GA to be exact) from Florida this week. So, Matt, the kids and I are going to go up next Friday to visit & hang out with them for the weekend. Since they’ll have about 10 people in the house, Matt and I decided to get a hotel room in local Blairsville, GA. Much easier with 3 kids, who sometimes don’t sleep well at night.

So last Wednesday I booked a room at the Best Western – or so I thought. All day Thursday I waited for a confirmation – but none came. I called the hotel that evening and they had no record of a reservation for me – of course! So, it was back to trying to find a great rate for a hotel. I could not seem to find the same rate I’d had before of 74$ a night, everything (including the promo code I’d used to get it to 74$) was not working. I could not get the hotel lower than 89$ a night.

So eventually after making the rounds of all the sites – expedia, hotels.com, etc I found myself staring at the “Priceline Name your Own Price” option. It scared me, so I left the site awhile – but found myself staring at it 20 minutes later. I didn’t like the fact that I wouldn’t see what hotel I was getting until after I booked. That was the only part that bothered me. It didn’t bother me that I couldn’t cancel the room or make changes. Lucky for us, there are only 3 hotels in Blairsville – and one was booked solid. The other 2 are national chains with great reviews (believe me I check). I would be happy with either hotel, so I took the plunge and entered “$65″, thinking “there is no way this bid or whatever is going to get accepted”. Sure enough, it got accepted – for the Holiday Inn Express – which is normally $129 a night plus tax. O.M.G. I did not just get this room for half price. I started giggling, and had to go run and tell Matt who was napping on the couch. Of course now I wish I could go lower – or started really low, and just gone up until it accepted it.

So, on Friday we’ll be making our way up to Blairsville to the Holiday Inn Express, with a heated indoor pool……..which is good since the temp up there last night was 33 degrees!

Hoping to get some great photos of the cousins, along with some great photos of the fall colors!

My favorite win is the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay for a night before our cruise at $39! The room would have been around $200 if I had booked with them online. Love it! Have a great time! Reply

Liza says: October 19, 2010 at 3:14 pm We used that last spring and got a hotel on Lido Key (south of Tampa) – $89 for a normally $300 hotel room. WOOOHOOO! It’s so pretty up there, and the perfect time to visit. If you get time, head into Hiawassee which is nearby. We stayed there at a B&B last fall and it was such a beautiful little town! Reply

It’s so pretty up there, and the perfect time to visit. If you get time, head into Hiawassee which is nearby. We stayed there at a B&B last fall and it was such a beautiful little town!
